Precision Shaft Alignment: Why 0.05 mm Makes or Breaks Your Plant Turnaround

Understanding thermal growth offsets, soft foot rectification, and why traditional straight-edge checks fail modern high-speed machinery.

## Tolerances That Protect Equipment Lifespans

Modern high-speed compressors operating at 3,000+ RPM cannot tolerate the rough straight-edge tolerances of the past.

### The Soft Foot Check Before tightening hold-down bolts, always check each foot individually with a magnetic dial gauge. If releasing any bolt results in deflection greater than 0.05 mm, correct with precision stainless steel shims.

### Accounting for Thermal Growth A machine that is aligned perfectly cold will move out of true once steam or hot hydrocarbon warms the casing. Always apply the manufacturer's thermal offset targets.
